A Guide To The Best Residential Roofing Products
Which roofing products are best for residential roofs in the Kentuckiana area?
When selecting a new roof system for your residence, you have a number of things to consider. Top of the list is always cost and durability. Other important considerations are energy-efficiency (considering the long-term savings you can achieve with a new roof), architectural style and aesthetics.
If you own a steep slope structure, then following roofing products are commonly used:
Asphalt shingles – The most common shingle used for residential applications in the United States. These shingles can be reinforced with fiberglass or organic materials. Organic felt reinforced asphalt shingles have been around for decades, fiberglass-reinforced products now dominate the market.
Wood shingles and shakes – Wood shingles and shake shingles are made from cedar, redwood, southern pine and other wood types. Shakes are handmade and slightly more rustic looking than wood shingles are machine sawn. Please note that some local building codes restrict the installation of wood shingles and shakes where fire risk may be an issue.
Tile (clay or concrete) – Tile is a durable roofing material with many different finishes, styles, colors. Tile Systems are the heaviest of all roofing products and come in numerous designs, colors, and styles. If you are installing a tile roof where a different one once sat then you will need to check that the roof structure is capable of carrying the weight of the new roof.
Slate – Slate is another natural material and is quarried. It, therefore, has a range of natural shades and colors. It is the most expensive of the materials but looks wonderful. It also costs more to install as special skills and tools are required. There are cheaper and slightly lighter synthetic products on the market that look and feel similar slate.
Metal – There are basically two types of metal roofing product: panels or standing seam sheets and metal shingles. Metal roofs are lightweight and have a greater resistance to adverse weather, They last a long time and have a lot of flexibility with aesthetic design and color.
